Abstract

Bacteria were isolated from Mediterranean sponges and specifically selected according to their antimicrobial activity. They were classified on the basis of partial 16S rDNA sequences as members of distinct clusters of α-Proteobacteria and γ-Proteobacteria. The action spectrum of antimicrobial activities against target organisms was related to the phylogenetic position of the isolates.
