Abstract

Today’s fast-paced technological progress has a direct impact on the size and complexity of modern software systems. With constantly growing codebases, software becomes harder to develop, deploy, and maintain. The microservices architectural design pattern tries to counteract this by splitting applications into a set of independent services. However, partitioning complexity by distributing it to multiple smaller units, which itself adds another layer of complexity, exacerbates options to keep track of the applications internal matters at runtime. Latter is often done by analyzing logs and assessing runtime metrics, as both contain vital information regarding the behavior of the software under execution.
In this thesis we conceptualize and implement an approach on using the Elastic Stack to collect logs and runtime metrics from ExplorViz, an application built on the microservices architecture.
