Abstract

230Th and 231Pa depth profiles in cores from the Peru Basin suggest that the sediment accumulation during the Late Quaternary was characterized by a sequence of periods with "normal" slow accumulation of siliceous-rich muds that were interrupted by shorter periods of up to one order of magnitude higher accumulation of carbonate-rich sediments. Faster sediment accumulation is caused by deposition of Miocene carbonate-rich sediments eroded in the southern regions of the Peru Basin. The periods of faster accumulation occurred at 70,000, 161,000-181,000 and 294,000-314,000 a and coincide with periods of global climatic cooling.
