Abstract

We study the influence of hydrostatic pressure on a transition from antiferromagnetic (afm.) to ferromagnetic (fm.) order that occurs in the intermetallic series Tb1-xYxNiAl and TbNi1-xCuxAl between x=0 and x=0.1. This is a remarkable transition, because (1) magnetic domains of both types coexist in parallel, (2) in the ordered phase the balance between both depends on temperature. The ordering temperature (TC=47 K) and the spin direction in the unit cell remain unchanged. First results are presented which show that in fm. compounds under pressure afm. ordering is re-established. In Tb0.95Y0.05NiAl at T=2 K and p=7 kbar, we find a domain ratio of afm:fm=75 : 25 compared to afm:fm=4 : 96 at ambient pressure.
